Art Prize 9 & Crowns of Courage
Happy Sunday!
I just wanted to share my amazing time at Art Prize yesterday! My sweet Mimi came with me, it was about 94 degrees out (thankfully we were inside), and my husband and son came down to DeVos Place to join us. Amanda (one of our henna artists) asked if I wanted some henna, and of course I said yes. Amanda and her boyfriend Steve spent 2 hours doing yet another amazing henna crown for me. It was nice for people to see how much time, detail, and love goes into doing this, as well as seeing them both do all their art freehand!
Some of the other ladies from Crowns of Courage were there with us; they are all so so sweet. Griffin was walking around (more like waddling, but he's learning), smiling, pointing at all the beautiful crowns, and trying to share veggies straws with Emily. It was so busy, which was great to see! I was blessed to meet other men and women enjoying Art Prize who shared their cancer stories with me. A man who was a 4 year survivor of brain cancer talked to Steve and me about how hard is was for him when he lost his hair. I hadn't really thought about this for men, so it was a change in my perspective. He now has long curly blonde hair, because he can!! I also heard a mom explaining to her daughter (who was maybe 4 years old) that these women on the wall had to take medicine to help them while they are sick and how the crowns were beautiful and helped us because the medicine made our hair fall out. I hope other parents can explain to their children in this way, to not be afraid of us, but to let us show our beauty.
I only got to see a few pieces once we left DeVos Place, but I'm hoping to see more next weekend. If you do visit, please please please vote!
This project needs to continue growing and helping as many people as possible. Cancer doesn't affect one person, it affects entire families and communities. I really knew nothing about cancer until I stepped right on it, literally, it was in my foot eating away my bones and I was trying to walk on it. Now I know more than I ever wanted to about cancer, enough to make health decisions, but not enough to let it rule me.
